FACT:
Since October 1, 1994, boaters have
been prohibited from discharging raw sewage into fresh or within coastal
saltwater limits. Coastal limits are 9 nautical miles on the Gulf and 3
nautical miles on the Atlantic ocean. Boaters, more than any other group,
want to protect and preserve our waters. The discharge of untreated sewage
from boats can cause human diseases such as gastroenteritis, hepatitis,
typhoid, cholera, and dysentery.
GOAL:
Increase the use of pumpout
facilities and waste dump receptacles to reduce or eliminate the discharge
of sewage into our waters.
ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE:
Use marina pumpout facilities.
When in marinas, use shoreside facilities.
Dispose of your pet's waste properly.
Use and maintain your Marine Sanitation Devices.
Hand washing with antibacterial soap and water is
essential for anyone using pumpout equipment.
